Leaders who follow through on promises enjoy enhanced credibility and loyalty. They inspire workers to perform well and even to go beyond what is asked of them.
You know how it goes. Someone who you want to meet with says they will get back to you by a certain time or even a certain date and 9 times out of 10, they don’t. Disappointment sets in and now the ball is back in your court to follow-up. It feels like empty promises and really lowers your belief in that person.
If you are in a leadership position in your business or organization, develop a self-awareness of your words to others to earn and maintain their trust.
One way to strengthen your credibility is learning how to commit to commit. You don’t need to say yes, or have an answer right away, but give a timeframe for when you’ll answer and actually do it.
For example, someone asks you on Monday if you’d be willing to serve on a new board. If you aren’t sure in that moment, thank them, tell them you’ll think about the opportunity, get back to them with questions and have an answer by Friday. Then do it, whether it’s a yes, a no, or a not at this time.
Another way to enhance credibility is to understand your values and be consistent in your actions. If people do not see this consistency, leading with credibility will be difficult. Focus on a few values and keep it simple. This will shape your identity as a leader and make it easier to promote those values constantly.
Last, make it a priority with those you lead and commit to training, coaching, modeling and accountability as part of the culture transformation. Committing to support the professional growth and development of those you lead will strengthen not only your organization, but also build a stronger community through the utilization of talent.
Following through on your commitment is a powerful habit to develop and will generate a good feeling from others. Lead with credibility and watch the positive response from those around you!
